Com. Elamaram Kareem represents the CITU from India at the 107th International Labour Conference in Geneva
Com. Elamaram Kareem spoke in the discussion on the resolution on decent work and decent wages. A summary of his speech:
"The ILO is trying to build consensus on the new resolution, but the employers' representatives appear to disagree with some parts of it. As we discuss this, can the ILO make governments and employers willing to ratify and implement the existing ILO conventions? ILO Conventions 87 and 98, on the right to form trade unions and to bargain collectively, are being widely denied. The principle of equal pay for equal work is being violated. All this has been made possible by the neoliberal policies being implemented at breakneck speed. There is no point in discussing this without saying anything about that crucial problem. This forum must be able to reflect the real problems of the different sections of working people."
